Safe Searching

There are various tools to protect children whilst performing searches on the Internet. The safest tool, as always, is adult supervision. This way, you can keep an eye on websites being accessed and offer advice on safe key words to use. However, this isn’t always possible, and so there are many search engines specifically designed for children such as

These are different in that the user cannot enter inappropriate key words. Furthermore, the search engines are carefully monitored and checked so that there is no adult or inappropriate content on any of the websites listed.

The only down side is that these sites are limited in what can be searched for and as a result may restrict older students when doing homework. For example, a child looking for information on drugs awareness for a Health project will be limited in the key words and search results. In this case, it is advisable to use the safe search settings on a more generic search engine such as Google.
