On Tuesday evening, the Academy opened its doors to welcome prospective students from Years 5 and 6 and their families. We received record breaking numbers of over 750 guests on the evening, which was themed ‘Around the World’.
Guests were welcomed by Miss Scott, the Head Teacher, who gave an opening address, supported by Jack and Sadie, two of our fantastic Year 8 students. Families then used their ‘Shine Airways’ map to explore all of the departments within the Academy and join in with some of the exciting activities and competitions in each subject area. For each area visited, students received a stamp in their passport, which when fully completed could be exchanged for prizes, which included new Joseph Swan stationary.
In addition to department areas, guests were encouraged to visit exhibitions relating to our Curriculum, Attendance, Pastoral Care, LA Admissions, SEND Department, Uniform and P.E Kit suppliers, and Newcastle United Foundation Projects. Guests were also invited to a taste testing session with Hutchinson’s Catering who provide the Academy food service. Refreshments were served as guests were treated to an extended concert by our Academy Band.
Staff in the Academy were supported brilliantly by over 150 students, who kindly stayed back to assist in departments, serve refreshments, offer tours to families and answer any questions given to them. This group of students were superb ambassadors for the Academy and as a result will be rewarded this week.
The feedback from everyone involved in the evening was extremely positive and there was a real buzz around the Academy. It was particularly pleasing to see students from over 17 different primary schools across Gateshead attending.
Mr Bland, our Deputy Head Teacher, is currently working within many of our local primaries to ensure we really get to know the students who will be coming to join us in the next couple of years.
Anyone wishing to book onto either of our two open mornings – on Tuesday 2nd and Thursday 4th October from 9-11am – please do not hesitate to contact Mr Bland on 0191 4422000 ext 249, or email the Head Teacher’s PA at the following address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
