We were extremely lucky last week to welcome representatives from a charity, Show Racism the Red Card, to the Academy. Over 200 year 8 and 9 students took part in workshops over two days which explored all aspects of racism. Students were given the opportunity to explore issues surrounding diversity, stereotyping and Islamophobia. Students spoke freely about their own personal experiences and addressed misconceptions throughout the workshops.
Miss Peverley, Year 9 leader, said, “I was extremely proud of our students and their inquisitive yet mature approach to the workshops, all of the students I spoke to said they gained a better understanding of where racism comes from and what we can do, collectively, to put an end to it”.
In addition to the workshops we also had fitness sessions with ex-footballer Gary Bennett and representatives from the Newcastle United training Academy. We look forward to welcoming the charity back in the near future to work with more of our students.
