Introduction to Transition

We work closely with our cluster primary schools to ensure Year 6 students feel confident and supported with their move to Joseph Swan academy. There is constant staff dialogue between primary staff and our Transition Team to ensure that there is both curriculum continuity and well managed pastoral care.

Throughout the year students in Years 4, 5 and 6 are regularly invited to the Academy and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of events and activities. These events include a range of subject areas, including Music, P.E., Science and Technology. This year we also have our new ‘Greater Depth’ events in both English and Maths where selected students will be taking part in our cluster’s ‘Spelling Bee’ competition and the UKMT Maths Challenge.

Throughout the year, Mr Bland, our Director of Transition, has regular visits into the cluster primary schools, delivering a variety of assemblies and lessons to years 5 and 6 in order to get to know all of our potential new students.

Every child who gains a place at Joseph Swan Academy will be visited by Mr Bland and Mrs Watson (Director of Home School Liaison) at their primary school. They will all be invited to our five day ‘Welcome Week’ transition event in July during which they will complete orientation activities; experience lessons; make new friends and be introduced to their form tutors. Following this, all students are invited to a four day ‘Summer School’ in the first week of the summer holidays. This event is completely free of charge and gives the students use of the whole Academy site to themselves.

Our Open Evening for 2017/18 is on Monday 2nd October 2017, 5.30pm – 8pm, followed by two Open Mornings on Friday 6th October and Friday 13th October (9am – 10.30am for both). Parents/carers can book a space on our tours by emailing andreaatkinson@josephswan.org.uk. If these dates are unsuitable, individual tours can be arranged by emailing chrisbland@josephswan.org.uk or by calling 01914422000.

If at any time during Transition parents/carers or students have any questions we are always happy to listen and help in any way we can.

We look forward to welcoming our future Year 7 students from primary schools into Joseph Swan Academy in September 2018.
