We Travelled the Amazon

Friday the 9th of February saw the Academy host its half termly Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development day. Our ambition was to travel the navigable length of the Amazon River (3343 km, or 2077 miles) in order to raise sponsorship for the Alzheimer’s Research UK charity… We did it!

Over 500 students and staff were involved and worked within P.E lessons, year group sessions, and before and after school to complete the challenge across the whole day. We travelled an amazing 3,400km on the day through rowing and running.

We are still collecting in the sponsorship money but are looking forward to raising a significant amount for such a worthwhile and fantastic charity. We were delighted to be joined on the day by the Newcastle Thunder Rugby League squad who participated in the event and contributed some of the miles to our total. We will be raffling a signed shirt that was kindly donated to the Academy with all of the profits going to the charity.

Joseph Swan Academy would also like to thank the following for their support with additional rowing equipment: Gateshead Sports Partnership, Kingsmeadow, Emanuel College and Thomas Hepburn.
