Year 7 Update

Dear Parent/Carer

Our Year 7 students have now completed half of their first academic year at the Academy and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support in ensuring this has been an extremely successful start to their academic life here at Joseph Swan Academy.  We have a busy and exciting remainder of the spring and then summer term ahead of us.

There will be a valuable opportunity for you to meet with your child’s subject staff to discuss their progress during this academic year on Monday 18th June 2018 from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.  You will receive more information regarding this event and how to make appointments closer to the time.

I would like to thank you for your support regarding uniform and equipment.  Year 7 students look extremely smart and are generally all fully prepared for learning each day; they are a credit to both the Academy and their family. To maintain our high standards uniform checks are conducted daily.  Can I remind parents/carers that the following are not permitted;

  • Trainers/boots
  • Make-up
  • Jewellery (except a watch)
  • ‘Skinny’ trousers

Attendance has been good, with a Year 7 attendance figure of 95.2% so far this year.  Attendance remains a high priority at the Academy and all students are expected to achieve a minimum of 95%.  Please ensure that your child attends every day and is on time.  If your child is going to be absent, please call the Academy before the start of the day and ensure you have a written note explaining the absence in their planner when they return.  Where possible, can I please ask you to support us by making medical and dental appointments outside of the Academy day.  Where this is not possible can you ensure your child attends the Academy before and after their appointment to ensure the least amount of learning time is lost.

I have been delighted with the way that students have really embraced our Academy ethos,

‘Where Everyone Can Shine’. We have a high number of regular attendees at the wide range of our ‘Go Active’ clubs.  We have had some excellent success in a range of sports, including medal winners in Football, Basketball and Rugby teams.  I would also like to thank you for your support of our numerous charity events this year.  My personal highlight is the £2000 we raised during for the

Royal British Legion with our Year 7 Remembrance Day Sponsored Silence.

We continue to reward our students with daily points and I was extremely proud to recently assist Miss Scott in distributing this terms rewards badges to students.  If your child is proudly wearing a new bronze or silver badge, then please do congratulate them as they have achieved a brilliant 1000+ (bronze) or 2000+ (silver) points so far this year.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Year 7 students this year.  I will be taking up the role of Deputy Head Teacher from half term.  I am very pleased to confirm that Mrs Watson will be taking over as Year Leader from 19th February 2018.  Mrs Watson is a very experienced member of staff and has been working with the students all year.  She is keen to build upon all the great work that has been done to ensure your child shines at Joseph Swan Academy.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Mrs Watson with any queries during the remainder of the year.

Yours faithfully

Mr C Bland
Deputy Head Teacher
